Site blockers are programs that prohibit the access of some websites. They may be added to the computer for such a purpose or they may already be installed as a feature of Internet browsers. Sometimes, site blockers come as parts of an anti-virus software package. There are different types of site blockers: some of them are intended to block specific websites, while others block pages based their contents.
The most common site blockers found in most Internet browsers are also called pop-up blockers. This type of site blocker prevents a website from loading if it thinks that the viewing of the site is unsolicited by the user. This type of site blocker also stops a page from opening if it is automated by the website currently being viewed. Pop-up windows are annoying for some people, particularly the ones that offer different things like emoticons and free screensavers. The site blocker may or may not notify you if these windows are shut down.
The second type of site blockers are more advanced and are intended so that parents or employers can stop accessing websites that they are not allowed to visit. In a home setting, these are often adult websites and others that may contain some form of violence. In an office setting, the employer may prohibit access of websites that have nothing to do with their nature of business. The parents or the employers may input the domain name of the sites and the site blocker will automatically display a blocked-site message when they are accessed.
The preceding type, though, may not be that effective as there are a huge number of websites that your child or employee may alternatively access. A more effective type of site blocker bases its system of blocking on the phrases mentioned in the site. This site blocker is often a part of a parental control software program that can block websites even without including them specifically on a list. When monitoring software is also available, the person who installed the site blocker may also be notified when a user tries to access blocked sites.
