Safe Eyes is one of the commercially available parental control software programs that have a set of features to monitor and restrict some activities on your computer. Among these activities are visiting web pages that may be inappropriate for children. Aside from default settings, Safe Eyes is perhaps best known for being a flexible tool so you can indicate which contents and activities are permissible for your children, and which ones are not. Here are the features of Safe Eyes:
- Content Filtering: Safe Eyes had set 35 categories of inappropriate Internet content for children. Aside from this, you can also specify the contents that you want to block and which ones they can access.
- Program Controls: You have the option of not letting your children access some programs. For instance, if you find that instant messaging may potentially bring harm to your children, then you can block access to these programs. P2P File Sharing Systems may also be blocked, not necessarily because they promote illegal downloads but rather because they can become a medium of exchanging malicious or violent content.
- Timer: This feature has two functions. First, it can set a time limit for Internet use. This helps in preventing children from accessing other content by really spending their limited time to research and do their homework. Second, you can set the time of the day when they can access online contents so you don't have to worry about late night net surfing.
- Usage logging: Safe Eyes can also create a record of the activities done with the computer. The log may include visited websites (site logging) and the programs that were used with the websites. If instant messaging is not blocked, it may also be included in the monitored and logged activities.
- Instant Alerts: You can also set Safe Eyes to automatically contact you while an inappropriate activity is occurring. This can come in the form of a text message, phone call or email.
